At first it was certainly a pleasure to use the grass trimmer and watch how it caught even the most hidden blade of grass with its rapidly rotating thread, without endangering the adjacent house wall or the nearby bush in the slightest bring to. But the joy doesn't last forever, every use wears out the thread in the grass trimmer, only if you correct this wear and tear regularly will you have lasting joy from your grass trimmer:
When does your grass trimmer need a new cutting line?
First, you should check whether there is still cutting line that simply needs to be fed. Your grass trimmer is usually equipped with a full spool of line, and the cutting line becomes slightly shorter with each use. So you should add a little bit of line regularly, whenever you feel that the grass trimmer's performance is decreasing. To do this, most devices only have to tap the floor once during operation. This releases the thread retention of the spool and new thread is unwound. The devices are equipped with a special cutting edge that cuts the thread at the right length, so you can now work really well with the grass trimmer for a while.
If new thread seems to be required after what is actually too short a time, the thread may have come into contact with firmer material while cutting the lawn. A small stone in the grass can cause the thread to break and at some point there will no longer be enough thread on the spool. Both constant use and occasional contact with harder obstacles make it necessary to install a replacement thread at some point:
How to install the replacement line in the grass trimmer
First you would have to find out whether you can install a replacement thread on your model or whether you need a completely new thread head. This variant is available on some cheaper devices, then you just have to buy the new head and replace it according to the description in the operating instructions. (If you are currently considering buying a grass trimmer: Very inexpensive models that need a new line head every time usually cost you more money in the long run.)
On the slightly more expensive grass trimmers, usually with brand names, the line head does not need to be changed if the line becomes weaker during the cut. Rather, you can open the thread button and insert a replacement thread. This is how it works:
- You buy a replacement line with the appropriate diameter, these lines are available in all shops that also sell grass trimmers.
- The correct thickness of the replacement line can be found in the operating instructions for the grass trimmer.
- Now open the line head of the trimmer, usually you have to press two clamps on the sides together.
- The cover of the line head can now be removed and you can take out the line spool.
- The replacement thread is trimmed to around 75 percent of the thread length permitted according to the operating instructions; experience has shown that the automatic thread feed works best with this length.
- The ends of the thread are fixed in a vice or with clamps on the work table.
- Now bend the thread exactly in the middle and hook the bend into the thread spool.
- There is an extra guide in the spool for each half of the thread, around which you wind the threads tightly and clockwise.
- The ends of the thread can now be freed; there are slots for them on the edge of the spool into which they can be clamped.
- Once you have reinserted the spool, pull the two ends through the holes in the sides of the thread head until they protrude approx. 20 cm.
- Now the lid can be reattached and the grass trimmer is ready for work again.
Are you not completely satisfied with your grass trimmer because the plastic thread is already weak on a strong blade, e.g. B. in a piece of meadow, failed? The ideal, slightly more powerful addition to the grass trimmer is the brush cutter, which does its work with a metal blade!
