A green, thick lawn is the pride of many garden owners in this country. It is all the more annoying when the lush green is interrupted by brown or even bare spots. In order to repair this, re-sowing is usually carried out. However, for some time now there has been a simpler variant on the market, the lawn paving. These granules contain seeds, fertilizer and usually also a water-absorbing substrate or gel.

Causes of damaged areas

Bald spots or gaps in the local greenery can have a variety of causes, such as:

  • Leaves
  • Weather
  • Mole, voles
  • Dog urinary
  • Witch Rings
  • Red-tippedness

But it is also possible that the lawn is simply worn out. It is important that you eliminate the causes, if possible, such as witch rings, before repairing the lawn. Of course, there is little you can do about dog urine. In this case, however, you should make the corresponding lawn area inaccessible to the dog for a while after the repair.

Lawn Repair

If gaps in the lawn need to be repaired, then this is considered laborious and time-consuming work. In addition, there is usually trembling as to whether the reseeding actually grows without gaps. This fact did not go unnoticed by the industry. The industry's solution to the problem has the somewhat confusing name of lawn paving, because this is not a piece of grass, but a substrate mixture that, according to the manufacturers, is suitable for compacting and repairing all types of soil.

Prepare and Repair

Although the lawn repair mixture makes the job easier, the affected areas need to be prepared. This includes

  • removing dead grass residues, roots, branches, stones
  • loosening the soil
  • straightening and unevenness

Once the preparations are complete, you can begin the actual repair of the bald spots. Plus

  • Spread lawn repair mixture
  • evenly
  • Layer of about 3 millimeters

If the paving serves to compact the lawn in thinned areas, then only the gaps are covered with the mixture.

Tip:

If there is an overdose, the individual seedlings do not have enough space to grow, so that the repair or lawn compaction can fail.

Regardless of the type of repair, the relevant areas are watered with a fine spray or watering spout after spreading.

Care

The biggest enemy when repairing a lawn is lack of water, although too much water can also damage reseeding. Many lawn owners are also familiar with the following problem: As soon as you have finished watering, the rain comes. Lawn patches that contain a water-storing germination substrate indicate when the water requirement has been met. For example, if the color has changed from light to dark brown during watering, the substrate can no longer absorb any more water. When it's light again, it's time to water. While regular watering is essential for seedling growth and survival, you can take your time fertilizing paving lawns. Since fertilizer is added to the patch, it is sufficient if you administer the first fertilizer after six weeks.

Note:

After six weeks, the bare spots should be completely overgrown.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantage of these substrate mixtures is certainly their ease of use, be it for compacting or to close gaps in the lawn. It must also be mentioned that the granules are suitable for all floors. The main disadvantage mentioned is the price, so its use in large areas should be considered. You also have to be aware that the lawn mixture does not necessarily have to be the color of your own lawn.
