A pond in the garden is something very special, especially if there is also a waterfall. However, this must not be too steep because the water will simply drain away too quickly. This not only disturbs the harmony and peace, but possibly also pond inhabitants. They don't feel comfortable in such waters, which also includes pond lilies. Because in poor conditions they cannot bloom and fish do not have a good climate when there is a strong waterfall.

Use excavation from the pond

To build this waterfall, the earth that was removed when the pond was excavated can be put to good use. Of course, stones are also very important for a pond waterfall. Here you should make sure that the stones are made of the same material, otherwise a lot of unrest can arise. Once the small, gently sloping hill has been built, stream trays can then be used. This is the easiest way and means there is no need to lay pond liner. These stream bowls are available, for example, from sandstone, ceramic, natural stone or plastic. This means everyone can choose the material that suits them best. These stream bowls are available from specialist retailers, but some hardware stores also offer them. If such a specialist retailer is not available locally, you can of course order them online or simply lay them out with pond liner.

Small stream increases water quality

If you want to increase the water quality in your pond, you should plan a small stream. Before the water flows from the stream into the pond, it is enriched with oxygen. This is of course very good for the plants and any fish. Of course, if there is not enough space, you can just build a small waterfall. Of course, this waterfall should also be built at the edge of the pond so that the water can enrich itself with oxygen. The excavation can also be taken from the pond for this smaller waterfall. A kind of wall can then be built from this, which also provides shade for the pond. In this case, the necessary height is quickly reached and of course stream bowls can also be used here.

Building a waterfall correctly with stream bowls

So that the stream bowls can be used correctly, steps should be installed with a trowel. This prevents the water from flowing too quickly and thus disrupting the overall harmony. Then fill these depressions with approx. 5 to 10 cm of gravel as lining for the stream bowls. Once this is done, the stream bowls are placed in this recess, slightly overlapping. The last stream bowl must protrude slightly into the pond so that the water can flow in here.

If you prefer to build your waterfall with natural stones or other stones, you will still need pond liner, which then ensures that no water runs off into the ground. Steps are installed to ensure that the water does not flow too quickly. However, it is better to fill these with sand so that the film is not damaged by sharp stones. It is also important that the foil runs straight upwards so that the water cannot overflow and seep into the ground.

Stones and plants make the waterfall unique

So that the pond liner is concealed and the stream bowls don't look so monotonous, stones are recommended. These should of course be made of the same material so that they radiate peace and harmony. If the water flows too quickly, a stone here and there can slow down the water and it still looks good. Simply place the stone in the steps of the waterfall and nature will do the rest. The stones also create small turbulences, which in turn allows more oxygen to get into the water. This is of course really good for the pond and its inhabitants and algae cannot form.

The right place for a waterfall

Of course everyone would like to see the waterfall from the front, and therefore this should be planned carefully. Just like the height and whether there should be a small stream. Of course, this depends on the size of the garden, otherwise it could simply be a small waterfall. It is important that a small elevation is built, which then makes it possible to excavate the pond. After that, there are no limits to the design, which means that the waterfall can also become a small biotope. Over time, the pond will attract insects, birds and perhaps a frog or two. However, not everyone likes frogs, but they do like good water. Anyone can improve their pond using the simplest means, without any chemicals when it comes to destroying algae. Of course, the fish and plants then feel much more comfortable because there is always enough oxygen supplied.

Stream bowls are the easiest way

Not all people are talented when it comes to crafts. Stream bowls, which can be installed quickly and easily, are particularly recommended here. There is also no need to lay out pond liner, which in turn saves a lot of time and nerves. Especially if a small, sharp stone is overlooked, this has fatal consequences for the pond liner. However, this decision is up to each individual, the only important thing is that the waterfall falls gently.

A high waterfall also has its advantages, but unfortunately it is loud and also disturbs the pond inhabitants. They prefer calmer waters, which people find better after work. So everyone can easily build their own waterfall and bring a piece of nature into their garden. Because water is of course always important for animals other than the inhabitants of the pond.

What you should know about your own waterfall in your garden

A waterfall in the garden – that has that certain something. Many garden owners probably think about whether such a piece of jewelry would fit into their garden. The good thing: You can also build a waterfall yourself and adapt it to your garden. It only takes up a small amount of space and works perfectly if you plan well.

Planning the waterfall

  • A pump is required for each waterfall. The performance this has to provide depends on the height difference to be overcome and the amount of water that needs to be pumped.
  • The pump also includes a flexible and durable hose. Other required technology may include filters and UV lamps. They are indispensable when building a waterfall with a pond. The technology can often be integrated very well into the structure of the waterfall.
  • In addition, the water from the waterfall has to be collected somewhere. A water basin, which can also easily be a pond, is therefore still necessary.
  • A water basin can be purchased ready-made under the name waterfall bowl from a garden center or you can build it yourself. This has the advantage that you can design the basin according to your wishes in terms of shape and capacity.
  • Planning also includes the location of the waterfall. If there is already a pond, you can easily combine the waterfall with it and it is easy to find a suitable location.

Construction of the waterfall

  • First you have to design the water basin. Accordingly, this is either bricked up or the purchased pool is buried in the chosen place.
  • Once the pool is finished or was already there, a connection is created between the pump and the water inlet of the waterfall.
  • The hose is used for this. It is advantageous if the hose is a little longer. However, the shortening will only take place after the waterfall has been completed.
  • After connecting the pump, the hose is covered with pond liner. The film is connected to the pond or the water collecting basin.
  • This means that the film is hung downwards into the pool or pond. It should therefore be a little longer again. You can always cut the rest off later.
  • The foil must now be secured at the bottom. This can be done with an adhesive or you can weld the foil on.
  • At the top, the foil is fixed behind the waterfall. Once the film has been installed, it is reinforced with pond fleece.
  • Then we continue with the actual waterfall. This will be bricked up and you can let your imagination run wild.
  • If you want a rippling waterfall, you can build in more or less steps using polygonal plates, for example.
  • If you want the water to come down in a gush, you do without this and simply build up the walls.
  • At the end, don't forget to incorporate the hose and secure the foil behind the waterfall.
