When bird droppings contaminate the patio or garden furniture, the owners are upset. The magpies quickly come under suspicion. How do you recognize the droppings of black and white birds? How is the removal achieved?
Characteristics of magpie droppings
The droppings of all birds are mostly white with a dark portion. Feces and urine are mixed. The dark part is feces, the light part is urine. Birds only have a single body opening for excretion, the so-called cloaca.
Size and color
The excretions of larger birds, such as magpies and crows, are significantly larger than those of titmice or sparrows. They are about 2 centimeters tall.
The color of bird droppings provides information about what the animals have eaten. Greenish coloring indicates vegetables, red or purple coloring indicates berries.
Magpies eat a lot of berries in autumn, so their droppings are often reddish in color.
Food leftovers
Magpies feed on
- Insects
- worms
- Spiders
- Snails
- Mice
- little birds
- Amphibians
- Carrion
- Fruits
- Grains and seeds
- Mushrooms
- Food waste
Magpies usually devour insects without being crushed. Wasps, however, are thoroughly crushed with their beaks before being eaten. Large insect remains in the droppings can indicate magpies.
Wolves
Magpies, like owls, excrete undigested parts of their prey. These are so-called rubbles. These have a diameter of around 2 centimeters. The magpies' burrows contain remains of fur, feathers, bones and insects. Larger traces of bird droppings and debris in a limited area can indicate magpies as the cause.
Location
Magpies are location-faithful birds. Anyone who often observes magpies in the garden can assume that the larger amounts of droppings on the terrace come from the thieving animals. By the way, if it is very dry outside for a long time, this is also reflected in the birds' excrement. Your stool will then be very solid and hard.
Remove traces of feces
The excrement of magpies can contain disease vectors. In addition, the ingredients are so aggressive that they can cause damage to the freshly painted facade or terrace.
Instructions
- Remove fresh feces with hot water, soap and a brush.
- Remove older traces of droppings on the floor or on the house wall with a high-pressure cleaner.
- Effective facade cleaner is available at hardware stores.
Prevent pollution
Limit the perching opportunities for magpies and other birds around your home. Roof grilles help prevent contamination on the facade. Prune the trees around your garden seating areas so that bird droppings cannot land on garden furniture or the terrace. Patio covers are good protection.
