The lawn is the highlight of most gardens. But many hobby gardeners take care of it incorrectly and then the green splendor will soon be over.
Morning or evening – water the lawn properly
Midsummer is actually pure poison for the lawn, as it suffers enormously from dryness during this time. It is all the more important that you give it the necessary moisture again. In this situation, many hobby gardeners simply grab a water hose and water the lawn with icy water, if possible when the sun is at its highest in the sky. This is of course completely wrong, because the burning sun and the ice-cold water ultimately lead to bare, brown spots in the lawn.
It is therefore advisable to water the lawn in the morning or evening if possible, when there is little or no sun. Ideally, however, you should prefer the early morning hours, as dew accumulates overnight and already provides the ground with some moisture. In addition, the soil cannot dry sufficiently in the evening and additional watering would result in traces of mold forming. The lawn would then be gone.
Too much watering of the lawn
Unfortunately, many people are under the misconception that a lot helps a lot. But the opposite is often the case, because the lawn prefers a little dryness every now and then and too much moisture would do more harm than good in the long run.
You can also easily test the moisture of the lawn by stepping on the grass. If the grass stands up again, there is still enough moisture in the lawn.
Many gardeners therefore rely on irrigation by lawn spraying. But this method uses huge amounts of water, of which only minimal amounts can reach the roots. An alternative is to water with rainwater, which you can simply collect in a suitable rain barrel and then use for all garden plants. This water also has the advantage that it is not as cold as tap water, which is rather unsuitable for lawns.
If you water the lawn in the morning, only in small quantities and, above all, only when it becomes necessary, then you will definitely enjoy your bright green lawn for a long time.
Automatic lawn watering
However, watering a lawn adequately to prevent drought and heat damage is very laborious if you do it the traditional way with a garden hose or even a watering can. Automatic irrigation systems for the lawn can provide a solution here.
The first requirement for installing automatic breed irrigation is easy access to a water connection, because without this it doesn't work.
Once you have clarified this, you have to decide on the right irrigation system. You can choose from different systems.
The simplest and cheapest option for watering the lawn is the universal sprinkler. These are connected to the garden hose, placed on a tripod or a so-called sled and watering the lawn can begin.
The universal sprinklers can be used fixed or rotating. How far they reach depends on the water pressure. However, a throw distance of around 15 meters can definitely be achieved with a universal sprinkler.
The pop-up sprinklers are another irrigation system for the lawn. With this, the nozzles are completely incorporated into the soil so that they cannot be seen when the lawn is not being watered. This not only restores the appearance of the lawn, but also eliminates the risk of accidents. When the irrigation system is switched on, the nozzles come out of the ground due to the built-up water pressure and begin watering the lawn. Pop-up sprinklers can throw up to 30 meters.
A third system is the spray nozzle systems. However, these can only be used to a limited extent in small areas. They only reach a throwing distance of 2 meters. However, its advantages are the price and the problem-free construction. The spray nozzles are attached to a spike to be inserted into the ground. The water is supplied via a short hose, which in turn is connected to the main water pipe, which can also be a hose, using an adapter.
The spray nozzle system is flexible and universally applicable. The nozzles can be inserted into the ground at any point.
Choosing an irrigation system for the lawn is certainly a decision that depends on the financial resources available. The fact is, however, that with an irrigation system you save time as well as money because the lawn is watered in an optimized manner. You won't achieve this if you water by hand.
