You can easily raise your double rod mesh fence yourself. Since it is a plug-in system, you only need the right extensions to adjust the height of the fence. Our guide provides you with the most important information on the topic.

Material and tools

One of the biggest advantages of a double wire mesh fence is the modular system. The fences can be expanded using suitable materials without much effort and a lot of tools. For this reason, the fence risers are often offered as a set and consist of the following components:

  • 2 x adapters
  • 2 x post extensions

These sets are usually suitable for corner posts with the standard thicknesses60 x 40 mmor60 x 60 mm.

Depending on the manufacturer, there are many sets that have post extensions with integrated adapters. This can be found out from the provider’s product description. Normally you can increase double rod mesh fences byLengths between 200 and 800 mm.

The post extensions are usually supplied with the necessary fastening material. These include:

  • Support trestles
  • clamp tabs
  • Screws
  • optional: flat iron

Tip:

Post extensions for round posts are rarely offered for double rod mats. Check with the fence system manufacturer to see if suitable extensions are available. If necessary, you can also use suitable pipe connectors.

Tools

You don't just need the extensions and double rod mats to raise the fence. The right tool will also help you implement the project effectively. Fortunately, the tool list is short:

  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Allen key (usually 5.5 mm)
  • if applicable Rubber hammer and cordless screwdriver

Increase double rod mesh fence: instructions

  1. Once you have the necessary materials and tools available, you are ready to get started. Start by removing the protective caps on the posts. To do this, use the slotted screwdriver. When prying open, be careful not to damage the protective caps.
  2. If necessary, remove debris that has accumulated in the post. This can be especially the case with older fences. Then insert the post adapter into the post. Make sure that you insert the adapter exactly aligned. It should click into place automatically.
  3. Now place the post extension on the adapter. Depending on the model you choose, you will have to help with the rubber mallet so that the extension sits against the actual post. Put the protective caps on the extensions.
  4. Once both post extensions have been placed, all you have to do is fix the rod mat. To do this, hang them on the existing support stands. This is where a helping hand comes in handy so that the mat doesn't slip off the trestles and pose a risk of injury.
  5. Now place the clamping tabs on the stands and screw them together. For this you need the hex key. Tighten the screws thoroughly.
  6. Now the fence elevation is finished. Depending on the post model you choose, you will then need to install a flat iron.

Tip:

The effort is even lower for systems with post extensions that have an integrated adapter. In this case, you simply have to attach the extension including the adapter to the old post.

Cost example for raising a fence

If you want to increase the height of a double rod mesh fence, you should not forget to calculate the costs. This way you can avoid unpleasant surprises. We have prepared a cost example for you in which a double rod mat is to be increased in the following dimensions:

  • Length: 6 m
  • Height: 60 cm
  • Strength: 6/5/6

The fence should be increased to a height of 120 centimeters over its entire length. The distance between the individual posts is two meters, which corresponds to four posts. Corner posts are not used. Required:

  • 6,000 mm x 630 mm double rod mats (6/5/6)
  • 4 x post extensions (60 x 40 mm) with a length of 600 mm

The expenditure on materials and finances is made up of the following factors:

  • Double rod mats: 90 to 100 euros
  • Post extensions: 160 to 200 euros (40 to 50 euros per piece)

The total costs for such a fence increase are around250 to 300 euros.

Frequently asked questions

Why shouldn't a privacy screen be attached to the elevation?

The elevations of the double rod mesh fence are not a continuous post. This reduces the wind resistance of the structure. A privacy screen would intensify the wind load acting on the extension. This in turn can lead to damage to the fence or an increased risk of injury. This is particularly important in windy regions.

How high can the neighbor's fence be?

This depends on where you live and the development plans and statutes that apply there. You should therefore contact the relevant building authority before you get to work. In most federal states, fences up to a height of 180 centimeters do not require approval as privacy screens, as long as the typical local height allows this and the minimum distance from neighbors is maintained. This is usually at least 50 cm.

What are the advantages over a single-rod mat?

Double rod mats have two horizontal steel rods compared to single rod mats. This system makes the double rod mats significantly more robust and can be used as a secure enclosure. Single-bar mats are primarily used as decoration or to delimit areas that do not require sufficient protection. For this reason, they are less recommended for property boundaries.
