Most of the plants found in the gardens are also suitable for terrace planting, as long as the lighting conditions on the terrace match the plants' requirements. That's why you can find all kinds of summer flowers, green plants and smaller trees there.
Suitable plants for the terrace
A holiday atmosphere arises on the terrace when large pots with palm trees or banana trees are placed there. Plants from the Mediterranean region such as olive and lemon trees can also be used for this purpose. These plants are even more suitable for the terrace than for the garden because they are only partially or not at all frost hardy and can easily be stored away for the winter as potted plants.
A terrace can also be used to grow fruit in pots. Fruit trees that have been grafted onto a rootstock always remain small and grow in a columnar shape, so they require little space. A climbing strawberry or various types of berries such as blueberries are also well suited for keeping in containers.
The trees such as bougainvillea or oleander and the plants on a standard tree need a little more space. There are now standard stems from many plants such as daisies, which bloom all summer long, or lantana, where the color of the flowers changes.
Boxwood, which can be cut into any shape, is particularly suitable as an evergreen decoration for the terrace. Privet can be used in the same way, but it is not as hardy as boxwood.
Planters for the terrace
On the terrace, the plants can be cultivated in small flower pots or in large containers. For a large number of small flower pots, there are shelves, which are usually made of wrought iron, and wooden ladders that become slightly narrower towards the top, so that the larger plants are at the bottom and the smaller ones are at the top.
Plants in large pots can be used as privacy screens for the terrace. Bamboo, for example, is well suited for this as it grows very quickly and is very tall. The pampas grass forms fronds in autumn, which last the whole winter and therefore also offer beautiful decoration for the terrace during this time.
For a wall around the terrace, as for the balconies, long plant boxes can be used, which are best planted with blooming summer flowers. Geraniums, pansies and horned violets, which have a long flowering period, are particularly popular and easy to care for. Evergreen plants such as ivy and small conifers such as dwarf conifers are suitable for year-round planting.
To beautify a wall on the terrace a little, you can use a planter with a large trellis. All plants that do not grow too tall are suitable for this. Hanging baskets also look very decorative and can be attached to the ceiling or to the wall with a bracket. They can be planted with hanging petunias, bluebells, fuchsias or nasturtiums.
