As long as the garden spider is in the garden, it usually receives little attention. It looks completely different when a garden spider suddenly appears in the house. Then it can cause more than just discomfort in people who are afraid of spiders. The question arises, is the spider poisonous? And how do you get them out of the house again?
Toxicity
Like most spiders, the garden spider (Araneus diadematius) is poisonous. She uses the poison to paralyze and kill her victims. The poison itself is harmless to humans. However, the bite of the garden spider can be painful, even if it cannot penetrate mammalian skin.
Caution:
A spider bite can also trigger an allergic reaction!
Avoid bites
No matter where the spider is, it is easy to avoid being bitten by it if you keep enough distance from it. Additionally, if a spider feels threatened, it will threaten before attacking. This can be recognized by the upright front legs. A spider that is obviously threatening should be left alone.
Spider in the house
Basically, you don't have to expect to find the garden spider in the house. Nevertheless, it can happen that it suddenly appears. It usually gets into the house or apartment through a constantly open window. There are several ways to deal with her then:
1. Catching the spider
The best option for the spider is to capture it alive and then return it to the garden. She won't be coming back and will instead find a suitable place outside. However, catching them can be difficult. The following variants can be tried:
Cup Method
A cup or a glass is used. Glasses with a diameter larger than that of the spider are suitable. The legs must not be touched either, otherwise the spider will try to escape. The cup is placed over the spider and a piece of cardboard is pushed under the spider so that it is trapped in the glass. This means it can be easily carried outside. The method is only partially suitable for orb-web spiders, such as the garden spider. It is difficult to capture a spider in its web.
Suitable vacuum cleaner
The usual vacuum cleaner with which you clean the apartment isnot used. It has too strong a suction. Light handheld vacuum cleaners without bags with minimal suction or a special insect or spider vacuum cleaner are suitable.
Note:
If the spider is to be caught alive, make sure that the vacuum cleaner is actually suitable for this.
2. Leave the spider alone
This method is certainly unusual, but it is possible to simply tolerate the garden spider in the house. As long as she finds enough food in her web, she will remain loyal to her location and may even leave the house on her own.
Kill the garden spider?
This is strongly discouraged. Not just because it is completely harmless to humans. It is also a useful animal. Even indoors, it can ensure that mosquitoes and flies are reduced. Nobody has to worry that one garden spider could attract many more into the house. The animals live solitary lives.
