Sun protection turns the balcony and terrace into a cool oasis of well-being on hot days. However, if the cozy “outside” is in a windy location, the question arises as to which shade provider will remain intact even in stronger winds.
Windproof shade providers
There are various solutions for placing a windproof shade provider on the balcony or terrace. There is a sensible and practical solution for almost every budget:
Awning
Awnings are perfect sun protection for balconies and terraces, but are generally considered to be susceptible to wind. This view is contradicted by models with the following features:
- Wind monitor / wind sensor (automatic retraction of the awning if the wind is too strong)
- Zipper-like guide on the sides of the awning fabric (additional stability)
louvered roof
A slatted roof is a pergola with rotating slats. However, the roofing is only suitable for terraces as windproof heat and sun protection. The following options are available for assembly:
- freestanding (four posts)
- Wall connection
- Integration into existing support structures (even without posts)
Note:
Slat roofs can withstand all weather conditions. Some models even carry a snow load of up to 50 kilograms per square meter.
Pergola with rope tension awning
This sun protection is a new form of pergola. As the name suggests, this shade provider is a combination of awning and pergola. The special properties are:
- open structure of the sun sail (comparable to a canopy of deciduous trees)
- straight side edges
- rope running all around
Pergola awning
Pergola awnings are primarily offered for terraces. However, there are also models that can be mounted on the balcony. Ensure wind stability
- two guide rails for the cloth and
- two posts at the end of the awning dropout.
Sun sail
Stable sun sails are particularly suitable for windy terraces and balconies as they can withstand winds of up to 55 km/h. When purchasing, you should pay attention to the following aspects:
- wind and water permeable material
- very large terraces: it is better to install two or more sun sails (better ventilation)
- Use high-quality material for wall mounting (dowels, screws, etc.)
- free-standing installation for the terrace: ground sockets with a depth of 130 centimeters

Note:
Adorn sails do not necessarily have to be removed. There are windproof models that can be rolled up manually or electrically.
Parasol
As with awnings, there are also models of parasols that are windproof. As a rule, a distinction is made between large (5 x 5 meters) and small umbrellas (3 x 3 meters). Regardless of the size of the parasol, the following properties make it wind-stable:
- Middle mast umbrella
- reinforced or double struts
- significantly higher aluminum content than conventional parasols
- Mast thickness of at least 35 millimeters
- Wall thickness between 2 and 5.5 millimeters depending on the shade size
- Anchoring using a ground sleeve (optimal)
Frequently asked questions
Are cantilever umbrellas suitable for windy balconies and terraces?
Cantilever parasols offer the wind a larger attack surface than center mast parasols. Therefore, they are not immediately recommended for windy balconies and terraces.
Are several small shade providers better?
That depends on the size of the area that needs to be protected from the sun. For example, if it is a very large terrace, experts recommend installing two or more shade providers.
