Originally introduced by the Moors in the 10th century, the almond tree is now an integral part of Mallorca and has a lasting impact on the island's natural landscape. Since a phylloxera plague destroyed entire vineyards in 1891, the robust almond has also been an important agricultural commodity. Although the numbers have been declining for some time, around 7,000 tons are still harvested annually today. Time of almond blossom
When the almond blossom begins on Mallorca depends on the prevailing temperatures and the course of the winter. Unfortunately, an exact prediction is not possible. However, the thermometer usually rises so high in the second half of January that the almond trees begin to bloom by the end of the month at the latest. In recent years, however, it has often been much milder, so the time of almond blossom is moving ever forward. At temperatures of around 15 to 20 degrees, the first flowers can venture into the sunlight shortly after the turn of the year.
